About The Horse Nerd
Oaklawn handicapping, done the nerdy way: real numbers, plain English, and a lot of free tools.
Why we're here
The Horse Nerd started with a simple idea: most racing fans love the sport but don't have hours to spend with past performances before every card. We do the homework — the workouts, the pace, the class, the trips — and turn it into something you can read in a few minutes at the track or on your couch.
Meet the Nerd
The Horse Nerd has been going to the races for 35 years — starting back when he was small enough to duck under the turnstile to get in. He grew up at Oaklawn, learning the game from the rail, the grandstand, and the past performances. Back before online wagering, he'd make the drive to Blue Ribbon Downs just to keep playing.
He's been to the Breeders' Cup and was at Lone Star Park in 2004 when Ghostzapper won the Classic — a run many fans, the Nerd included, still call the fastest they've ever seen. Along the way he's made more than a few trips to the IRS window — the line you only stand in after a big score — and he's spent three and a half decades learning what separates a live horse from a pretty past-performance line.
Now he's putting all of it — the track sense, the trip notes, the numbers — on one sheet, so you don't have to spend 35 years learning it the hard way.

How we work
- Oaklawn only. We focus on one track and know it inside and out.
- Honest about results. Handicapping is opinion. Nobody wins every race, and we'll never pretend otherwise.
- Teach, don't just tell. The glossary and payout chart are there so you understand the "why" behind every pick.
- Play responsibly. Racing should be fun. Set a budget and stick to it.
