Frequently asked questions

What is the Purple Sheet?

Our tip sheet for the Oaklawn card: selections for every race, best bets, value plays, exotic ideas, and the Horse Nerd Number for every horse.

How do I get my sheet?

Single-day and weekend packs are emailed as a PDF by 10:00 a.m. Central on each race day you bought. Monthly and Full Meet plans unlock the members area, where each sheet is posted by 10:00 a.m. Central every race day; just log in and download it. At Oaklawn you can also buy the printed Track Edition for $5 (see below).

What's on the $5 sheet at the track?

The printed Track Edition is $5 at Oaklawn and includes top-4 selections for every race, the Best Bet, and the Best Longshot. The Horse Nerd Number, value plays, and exotic ideas are on the full sheet online only.

What if a selection changes after I get my sheet?

Any changes to our selections after a sheet is released (scratches, track condition, races taken off the turf) are posted on our social media pages: X, Facebook, and Instagram. We don't send out an updated sheet, so follow along on race day.

Do you give out a free pick?

Most race days we post one free selection on our social media pages: our Race of the Day, with a short breakdown of the race and the reason for the pick. It's a sample of how we handicap. The full card is on the Purple Sheet. Follow us so you don't miss it.

What plans are available?

Single day $8, Friday–Saturday or Saturday–Sunday $14, Friday–Sunday $20, Monthly $65, and Full Meet (65 days) $225. See the Tip Sheet page for details.

What if a card is canceled?

You'll get a make-up sheet for another race day. Make-ups for closing day carry over to next season and can be used until December 31. We don't offer prorated refunds. See our Refund Policy.

Can I get a refund?

Sheets are final once delivered, and printed sheets are final. Make-up sheets cover canceled cards as described in our Refund Policy.

Is The Nerd Watch really free?

Yes. The Nerd Watch is our nightly recap of the day at Oaklawn: that morning's notable works (just the ones worth your attention, not every horse that breezed), the races that mattered, and how our top picks did. It's posted on the site and emailed each race night. It covers what already happened; picks for the next card are on the Purple Sheet. Sign up at the bottom of any page.

Can I place a bet with you?

No. The Horse Nerd is not a gambling website and does not accept wagers. Our content is handicapping analysis and opinion for entertainment purposes only. If you bet, use a licensed provider, be 21+, and only wager what you can afford.

How is the Horse Nerd Number calculated?

That's our secret! Read what it considers and how to use it on The Horse Nerd Number page.
